QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis team lost a tough match to the No. 38 Louisville Cardinals on Friday in the opening round of the BIG EAST Championships on the campus of the University of South Florida. UofL came from behind after losing the double point to clinch the match, 4-1, with four straight wins in singles play.

With the loss, the Red Storm dropped to 10-11 on the season, while the Cardinals improved to 17-6.

It was St. John's that struck early, capturing the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. The STJ pair of sophomore Martin Kosut and junior Alex Svetlakov won their matchup with Louisville's Austen Childs and James McArthur, 8-6, at the No. 2 spot. Then, sophomore Derek Wallensteen and freshman Pavel Cerny teamed up to win their match at No. 3, 8-4, clinching the point for the Red Storm.

STJ looked to ride the momentum of the doubles win into singles competition, but the high-powered lineup of Louisville was tough to match up with. The Cardinal men picked up the points at the Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 5 spots with straight-set victories to clinch the win and a trip to the semifinals.

St. John's will return to action Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with consolation bracket play. The Red Storm's opponent has not yet been determined, as the team awaits the final results of Friday's action.
