TAMPA, Fla. - The St. John's men's tennis team won big on Saturday afternoon at the BIG EAST Championship in Tampa, Fla., sweeping No. 6 seed Georgetown, 4-0, at the Andros Dorm Courts on the campus of the University of South Florida. With the win, STJ's record improves to 11-11 on the season, while GU's drops to 10-14. The Red Storm got off to a strong start by capturing the doubles point. After losing at the No. 1 spot, St. John's won two straight matchups to clinch. Alex Svetlakov and partner Martin Kosut got things rolling when they defeated David Tillem and Etienne Paris, 8-4, and then the pair of Derek Wallensteen and Pavel Cerny followed suit with an 8-6 win over GU's Anthony Tan and Ted Tywang. St. John's continued its momentum into singles play, as it nabbed victories in straight sets at the Nos. 2, 5 and 6 positions to post the win. Svetlakov defeated Tillem, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot, while Cerny posted the 6-1, 6-3 win over the Hoya's Adam Gross at No. 5. Asaf Honig finished strong for the Red Storm at the No. 6 position, winning 6-4, 6-3 over Tywang. On Sunday, No. 7 seed STJ will return to action and face No. 4 seed Marquette at noon on the P.E.
